The (last) weekender

Here are some pictures from last weekend in NYC.  I didn't take nearly enough and capture all of my favorite people, but sometimes life gets in the way of picture taking even for serious bloggers like myself.

Impressions of a Wedding

wedding painting

My Mom sent me this picture to me from the beautiful wedding she attended this weekend.  She is also a lover of details (especially wedding ones) and I wanted to share this with you for some wedding inspiration.

The couple had an artist at the wedding recpetion painting the feeling of the party.  What a creative idea and a special keepsake for the bride and groom from their big day!

New York Minute

The Newlymeds are back from a too short, but wonderful weekend in NYC.  It was jam packed with activities from 2 weddings, so if you live there and we didn't get to see you, we still love you!  One of these days we plan on making it there just because, but for now it is weddings that bring us back to our old home.

Now we are back in the big D trying to get caught up with work and sleep.  My Favorite Things wedding post is coming up this week as well as some pictures from the weekend.

Skin & Bones

DSC_0136

This weekend the Plastic Surgeons, the Orthopedic Surgeons and the General Surgeons competed in a friendly little competition called Skin & Bones.  This is the first year that the competition was held on a weekend and families were invited.  (Progress!) It was nice way to spend a Sunday with Doctor J and meet some of the other residents and their families.

Doctor J would be upset if I failed to tell you the Plastic Surgeons won!  As soon as I get the trophy kissing shot, I will add it to the post.

What did you do this weekend?

Coffee

Today is day 6 of 7 of a week long event I am working for an accounting firm. After putting in an 18 hour day yesterday, coffee is the only thing keeping me going.

I don't know how these Doctors do it!  I woke up with what felt like a killer hangover, which I'm sure is due to lack of sleep.  It is amazing how great we can feel after a great night of sleep and how miserable we can feel when we need some.

Now sitting at my desk, after my group is in another breakout session, this vanilla latte I am drinking is warming my heart.

As a non-coffee drinker, I am just discovering my bond with the bean and it's love.

How dependent are you on your morning coffee?  Do you drink more than one cup a day?  What is your coffee drink of choice?

Guest Blogger: Vmac +Cheese on Fall Fashion!

Hi Newlymeds readers! It's Victoria from vmac+cheese. I was super excited when Kelly asked me to contribute a post to her blog. I love reading about her adventures with Dr. J, don't you?

Even though I live in San Francisco now, I grew up in Texas. So believe me when I say I know exactly what it's like to wish for cooler fall weather, despite summer temperatures sticking around into October. It can make shopping a little frustrating, since there are sweaters and heavy coats everywhere, yet outside it's still in the 90s! One thing I've learned in San Francisco is the value of layering, and I think this concept translates well in hotter climates too. You can easily purchase items that will work in summer, and with the right layering pieces and accessories, take them right with you into fall. Here are several looks I pulled together:

You can check out where all the items are from by hopping on over to my Polyvore (just click on any of the items to get the merchant source and price!). Of course, there are some definite splurge items in here (that will NOT be making it into my wardrobe this season), but the idea is to find other pieces that are similar to create the look you want.

Thanks, Kelly, for having me today, and if you get a chance, please come say hi on my blog!

Medical Mondays

medical

We asked for your questions on our Paging Doctor J post and you responded.  We are excited to bring your our first Medical Mondays!  Once a month Doctor J will answer your burning medical questions.  Here is our first question posted by anonymous.

What are the major risks of breast implants in your 20's?

There are a few things to consider when thinking about breast augmentation in your 20s. On top of the general questions one should ask and consider when getting breast implants, there are a couple of issues specific to youth.

The first is concern for the ability to breast feed. You should be able to breast feed after breast augmentation, however there is a small risk that this could be compromised, and thus should be discussed with your surgeon.

Second is the consideration of need for future surgeries. Breast implants are currently recommended to be exchanged ( new ones placed) every 8-10 years. This means that if you want to keep breast implants over the course of your life you are looking at multiple surgeries over time.

Third is your activity level. Depending on how active you are might influence where you want the implants placed, which can be above or below the muscle of the chest ( pectoralis muscle). There are pros and cons to each approach, but if you are very athletic, submuscular implant placement may not be a good choice for you.

Breast augmentation can be a wonderful experience for a patient, but it is surgery with long term implications that should be considered before undertaking such a large and life altering project.

*This advice is not to be considered professional medical advice and before any medical decisions are made you should always consult your doctor.

My Favorite Things: The Ginger Duo

IMG_2751

Doctor J and I are back from a wedding of one of his medical school friends  and (now) his lovely wife!  The two met in college, dated throughout medical school and now reside in the Big Apple.  It was a quick trip but it was so much fun to see all of Doctor J's medical school friends at the wedding and home friends on Monday on the Jersey Shore.  J even got a little surfing in, which is the thing he misses the most (besides his friends & family).  Here a a few pictures from our day on the Jersey Shore.

It is now time to report on My Favorite Things from the wedding.  As a former wedding planner and bride I always pay attention to all of the little details. You former and future brides know what I am talking about!

I had so much fun at the wedding that I didn't capture everything on film, but here are a few of My Favorite Things from the wedding weekend:

1. Doctor JM has divorced parents.  They each walked down the aisle with their significant others and then walked back up the aisle to walk down together with their son.  I thought this was a very sweet touch and a great way to include everyone in the ceremony.

2. The bride's glow and energy.  She was so happy and it was so special to watch V on her special day. Her energy radiated!

Now time to gear up for the (short!) week.

How was your labor day weekend?
